Meet Nick Bambick

Name: Nick Bambick

Title: Manager – Strategic Pricing

Company: Sonic Drive-In

Current City: Oklahoma City, Okla.

Hometown: Fredonia, Kan.

Years in the market research industry: 6

What duties does your current job position include? Developing and evangelizing Sonic’s pricing strategy, consulting with new product development and brand teams on promotional pricing, economic analysis, and competitive intelligence.

What’s the best aspect of your current job position? I absolutely love the process of building a strategy, a case, or an action plan around pricing and persuading Sonic’s franchisees to buy in.

…and the worst (if there is one) ? For me, it’s when I’m unable to convince a decision maker that price increases don’t automatically flow through to revenue and may actually cost the drive-in visits – that pricing is a two-way street, and with no consumer, there’s no sale.

What do you see coming in the market research industry during the next five years? I’ve noticed much quicker turnaround times in recent years, so technology is obviously changing the game as it is in most industries. But for pricing specifically, I’m excited to see how mobile technology will expand the base of competitive pricing knowledge.

How did you first come to work in market research? I arrived at Sonic in October 2012 to work as a pricing analyst, and shortly thereafter, I was shifted into a shorthanded insights department, where I worked for 2 ½ years before transitioning back into pricing.

What led to you to joining the MRA? I had the opportunity to speak at the Las Vegas conference in 2018, and was flattered by an opportunity to join the board.

What is your educational background? B.S. Kansas State (Mathematics, Journalism)
M.A. University of Cincinnati (Applied Economics)

Where else have you worked in the past – including non-MR positions? I was a trading assistant at a boutique futures brokerage in Kansas City from 2008 to 2012. I had also previously interned at Morgan Stanley in Cincinnati.

What do you do in your spare time – hobbies or activities? I treasure my one or two golf outings each year! I also love attending the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament when it’s played close by – by the end of this month, I’ll have attended 27 March Madness games in person!

Do you have any unusual talents? Since I used to be a broadcaster, friends love to hear my “radio voice.”

What would others be surprised to know about you? I won $47,000 on Wheel of Fortune in 2014.

Favorite book or movie? Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love by Carl Anderson

What is your ideal vacation? I’d like to just drive for 7-10 days, catching at least one college basketball game each day (doubleheaders on weekends).

Final comment or quotable: “The doctors x-rayed my head and found nothing.” – Dizzy Dean
